Document Summary

Antibiotic- produced by one microorganism that harms other microbes. Antimicrobial agent- any agent natural or synthetic, that has ability to kill or suppress microorganisms. Explain the importance of cell wall integrity and protein synthesis to bacterial survival. Bacteria are complete cells, with cell wall- can survive and replicate outside of host. Viruses are acellular, consisting of nucleic acid (dna or rna, not both) and proteins. Overtake host"s protein making mechanisms of the host cell makes viral proteins. Incapable of replicating outside a host cell; may survive for a time and remain infectious. Gram negative- normal flora in gi tract and anaerobic organisms. Organisms from one area may become pathogenic if move to another area. Bacterial ribosomes read dna and produce new proteins. Interference with cell wall synthesis, dna or protein synthesis damages bacterium"s ability to maintain cell wall integrity, normal function and replication. Explain the role of host defenses in recovery from infection.
