Diagnosis of hypertension: at initial presentation, patients demonstrating features of a hypertensive urgency or. > 140 emergency should be diagnosed as hypertensive and require immediate management. In all other patients, at least two more readings should be taken during the same visit. If using obpm, the first reading should be discarded and the latter readings averaged. If bp is still elevated, htn can be diagnosed. If bp remains normal, white-coat hypertension can be diagnosed. Tests should be performed to determine if target organ damage is present. Gender - more so male than female; equal between ages 45-65. Family history one or both parents having htn increases the risk. Poor dietary habits excessive na intake, saturated fats, nitrates, excess alcohol intake, vitamin d deficiency. Personality traits hostile attitudes and time urgency/impatience, as well as those with depression.
