Document Summary

Cisgender (cid:894)o(cid:396) (cid:858)(cid:272)is(cid:859) fo(cid:396) sho(cid:396)t(cid:895) is the te(cid:396)(cid:373) fo(cid:396) those of us (cid:449)ho a(cid:396)e the ge(cid:374)de(cid:396) (cid:449)e (cid:449)e(cid:396)e assig(cid:374)ed at birth. You are cisgender if the do(cid:272)to(cid:396) o(cid:396) (cid:373)id(cid:449)ife said (cid:858)it(cid:859)s a (cid:271)o(cid:455)(cid:859), o(cid:396) (cid:858)it(cid:859)s a gi(cid:396)l(cid:859), a(cid:374)d (cid:455)ou have never disagreed with that assessment: transgender. Transgender (cid:894)o(cid:396) (cid:858)t(cid:396)a(cid:374)s(cid:859) fo(cid:396) sho(cid:396)t(cid:895) is the te(cid:396)(cid:373) fo(cid:396) those of us (cid:449)hose ge(cid:374)de(cid:396) is (cid:374)ot the o(cid:374)e (cid:449)e were assigned at birth. Interestingly, part of hegemonic masculinity is the presumption of heterosexuality as being central to how masculinity is expressed: emphasized femininity. Emphasized femininity is the feminine counterpart to hegemonic masculinity. It is also so(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es (cid:272)alled (cid:858)h(cid:455)pe(cid:396)fe(cid:373)i(cid:374)i(cid:374)it(cid:455)(cid:859) a(cid:374)d includes traditionally feminine and/or highly sexualized traits (again, these are variable across time and cultures). Like hegemonic masculinity, emphasized femininity is presumed to be heterosexual. We see this when people are surprised by the existence of feminine lesbians, or the ways that lesbians who have feminine expressions of gender are often presumed to be straight.
