Chapter 9, generations and technology.
a generation: a cohort or groups of people who share similar chronological ages (usually 15
year time span) and who are shaped by events, trends and development of a particular time span.
The worlds events, inventions and media helped shaped the individual
cohort: any group of people who are a time specific period, such as graduation the same year.

technology.

Traditionalist,
born between 1925 and 1945, parents of the baby boomers, also known as the world war 2
generations, fastest growing cohort in Canada today, makes up 13.8% of Canada’s population
- Many cases these are your grandparents or great grandparents, growing up in these times
they experiences the great depression, world war 2, pearl harbour the Korean war and the
ride of the labour unions. Most men fought in the wars and learned to live through these
hard times
- Technology, was the golden age of the radio, children’s stories, med skits and the names
of loved one lost were broadcast through the airwaves
- The hard times that Traditionalist lived through defined the individuals that they are
today, these are dedicated, frugal and loyal induvial, who may be set in their ways
Traditionalist today
-seniors are living longer with fewer disabilities then generations before them but the majority at
least suffer with one chronic disease (a disease that last a long time and progresses slowly
examples are arthritis and heart disease ) or condition.
- arthritis or rheumatism is the most frequently reported chronic condition among seniors, affects
women more than men
-the older generations using the computers and technology helps decrease their isolation. And
increase their awareness about health issues
-a particular concern for the aging population is elder abuse, difficult to detect is victims suffer a
form a cognitive disorder (a mental disorder that effects memory perception, learning and
problem-solving skills like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Elder abuse: a single act or repeated act against an older person in which harm or distress is
caused. Abuse can be physical, psychological/emotional, sexual or financial can also shape itself
into intentional or unintentional neglect
- Between 4-10% experience elder abuse in their life
- Granny cams: security cameras intended to monitor for elder abuse by caregivers,
installed in the seniors loved on living space
Baby boomers
1946-1976 the baby boom lasted almost 20 years in Canada, raised by traditionalist
“thank gods its Monday” their careers became a symbol for their self-value and self-worth until
1980, a huge wake up call for baby boomers, massive layoffs gave them cause to rethink their
lives and redefine who they are.
They work hard and play hard enjoying benefits
