the royal proclamation of 1763: is one of the most important documents pertaining to aboriginal
land claims
-key was crown named aboriginal people as original holders of the land and deed titles them to it,
and all the land would be considered aboriginal land until ceded.
Cede: surrendered of forfeit possession of something usually by treaty
Monopoly: situations where someone has exclusive control over goods or services, allowing
them to set any price.
- Upper Canada treaties (1764-1862)
- Vancouver Island treaties (1850-1854)
-treaties made between 1871 and 1921 are referred to as numbered treaties, signed by the
government of Canada and the firsts nations people
Canadas reasons for treaties
-land for resources, to build a railroad and create arable areas for settlers
-expansion of Canada shore to shore
- and use of the lands natural resources.
Because of the railroad bung built it uploaded many aboriginals and they moved into settlements

Land claims are still trying to be solved, two types
Comprehensive claims: a modern day “treaty making process” where aboriginal land rights
have not been dealt with by past treaties or through other legal means.
But involve matters related to the land where specific claims aren’t necessarily lad-related.
Specific claims: process to deal with past grievances, mainly of first nations, related to unfairly
distributed land or mismanagement of fist nations funds by the crown. Can be dealt with in
provincial court system
Problems with land claims
- Number and kind of parties involved in the process. Often both federal and provincial are
involved
- Duley George was the first person to be killed by a police officer over a land claims
dispute.
War measures act: 1914, statute that gives emergency powers to the federal government, which
allows it to govern by orders when there’s a real or perceived threat of war or invasion.
- Stoney point, was aboriginal land they were paid 15$ an acer and it was used for military
training ground. Was meant to be returned and wasn’t.
Leaders craft The two row wampum belt to make an important agreement, it’s a treaty of respect
for the dignity and integrity of both partied involved and it stresses the importance of
independence and non-interference
- Consists of two rows of purple wampum beads set on a background of white wampum
beads, the meaning of the beads is healing, jewellery and decoration,
