ANAT 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Muscularis Mucosae, Submandibular Duct, Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Document Summary
General structure and functions of the digestive system: Digestive system includes organs that ingest food, transport the ingested food material, digest the material into smaller, useable components, absorb the necessary digested nutrients into bloodstream, and expel the waste produced from the body. Not part of the long gi tract. Outgrowths form and connect to gi tract. Assists gi tract in digestion of material. Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Consists of two distinct regions: vestibule: space between cheeks/lips and gums, oral cavity proper: lies central to alveolar process of the mandible and maxilla. Palate: roof of the oral cavity, arch in barrier to separate it from the nasal cavity. Hard palate: 2/3 of the palate, is anterior. Soft palate: 1/3 of the palate, is posterior that is soft and muscular. Uvula: extrinsic inferiorly from posterior part of the soft palate, a conical median projection. Tongue: accessory organ, primarily formed form skeletal muscles and covered with stratified squamous epithelium.
