Visceral: motor (eferent) division: carries messages from the brain and spinal cord out to the muscles and glands. 31 pairs: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal. The cervical nerves are numbered by the vertebra below, except spinal nerve c8, which exists below vertebra c7 and above vertebra t1. The thoracic, lumbar, and sacral nerves are then numbered by the vertebra above. Lumbar plexus: arises from of l1 - l4, innervates the lower abdominal region and the anteromedial thigh. Sacral plexus: arises from l4 - s4, peripheral nerves of this plexus innervate the butock, the posterior thigh and virtually all of the leg and foot. Dermatomes: an area of skin that is mainly supplied by a single spinal nerve: zebra stripe concept.
