Inserts onto iliatibular tract; crosses knee joint after running down lateral side of leg. Iliac lateral condyle of tibia: gluteal medius: intermediate, fan shaped triangular muscle, one layer down from maximus. Originates on the upper milddle portion of ilium greater trochanter. Abducts thigh, and medial rotation of thigh at hip joint: gluteal minimus: deep to the medius. Originates on the lower portion of ilium greater trochanter.
