Took the expressionism out of abstraction & offered a calculated, impersonal, precise & cool style of painting as if made by machines. What you see is what you see. frank stella. Emphasizes the painting as an independent object. No personal handling used, commercial house paint, & metallic paint. Familiar two dimensional objects: flags, targets & maps. He made icons of the stupidest consumer items like tin cans, toilets, lawnmowers, and celebrities ex/ elvis presley. (brought art to the masses by making art out of daily life) (he caved attention) Used a machine like process with silk screen printing. Style borrows comic book techniques as well as subjects. Enlarging pulp magazine panels to billboard size slaps the viewer in the face with their triviality. Style combines colour & abstract pattern to produce optical illusions of pulsating movement.
