Akrotiri known as the pompeii of the aegean because it was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. Thera is the largest island of a group that are called santorini all together. After large eruption, volcano sank back into itself creating two distinct islands: cliff wall descends into caldera = where the volcano used to be, cliff wall, by extension, isn"t natural but is made of volcanic fill. Later eruptions caused the volcano to rise, creating the 4 islands we call santorini. No water on the island so it must be imported. Was called kalliste in antiquity meaning the most beautiful . Dig began in may 25, 1967 (delay due to ww ii) Only very small portion of whole town has been found. Whole site was protected with a roof but a few years ago the roof collapsed and killed a few people so excavation was halted so a better roof could be put in.
