Integrative medicine= capture the notion of conceptualizing medicine as allopathic and complementary or alternative - cam= along with, rather than instead of. Alternative medical systems (looks at the condition of patient, rather than symptoms) Cultures have elaborated complete systems of medical philosophy, theory, and practice long before the current biomedical approach was developed. The concept of life force or energy- qi, vis vitalis, prana = life force. Traditional medical systems= disease as a disturbance or imbalance in physical, forces, and energies of the body ex: yin and yang. Treatment= reestablishing equilibrium, balance, and harmony= multiple techniques. Diagnosis of individual extensive: inspection, listening and smelling, inquiry, palpation. Acupuncture: correct the disturbances in the flow of qi via insertion of thin needles into the skin at points along meridians, pathways through which qi is believed to flow. Acupressure: the art and science of applying physical pressure on certain acupuncture points: points may change over the course of the treatment.
