Introducing Psychological Science
The Science of Psychology
• The scientific method
o Following a system of observing, predicting, and testing is conducting
science
o Sci method is a way of learning about the world through collecting
observations, developing theories to explain them, and using the theories
to make predictions
o Hypothesis: Making predictions – a testable prediction about processes
that can be observed and measured; can be supported or not rejected but
not proven
o Theory: an explanation for a broad range of observations that also
generates new hypotheses and integrates numerous findings into a
coherent whole
o Scientific literacy: the ability to understand, analyze, and apply scientific
information
o Biopsychosocial model: a means of explaining behavior as a product of
biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors

• Empiricism: a philosophical tenet that knowledge comes through experience
• Determinism: the belief that all events are governed by lawful, cause-and-effect
relationships
• Psychological science is both empirical and deterministic
• Nature vs Nurture: impact of heredity (nature) vs environment (nurture) on
behavioral and mental processes
