Document Summary
Stat 263 lecture 1 introductory material: statistical techniques allow you to get information from data. Lurking variable: something that is not being studied in a study but has an effect on the relationship among the variables and the outcome of the study: also known as a confounding variable or confounding factor. Example: if someone concludes that children who exercise more grow taller, a lurking variable may be genetics as genetics is not being taken into consideration but does have an effect on growth. Operational definition: a clear, concise, and detailed definition of a measure that allows everyone to collect the required data in the same way. Example: if a study was looking at intelligence, the operational defi(cid:374)itio(cid:374) for (cid:858)i(cid:374)tellige(cid:374)(cid:272)e(cid:859) (cid:373)ay (cid:271)e a perso(cid:374)(cid:859)s iq s(cid:272)ore. Mutually exclusive: if a and b are 2 events, a and b are mutually exclusive if when a occurs, b does(cid:374)(cid:859)t a(cid:374)d whe(cid:374) b o(cid:272)(cid:272)urs, a does(cid:374)(cid:859)t.
