The etruscans dominated central italy from about 800 b. c to about 500 b. c when the romans started to reverse the power structure and began dominating etruria. We know about them mostly from their tombs, in which we find all sorts of things, including greek pottery that they imported in quantity. Etruscans art followed greek art very closely, especially when we get to etruscans using greek archaic conventions of representation. Despite this influence etruscasn artists did not follow the greeks mindlessly, and injected their own values, interest, feel for form and use of materials into their work. In the case of the spouses, they are obviously an initimate couple and we really do not have anything exactly to this equivalent in greek art. Sarcophagi like these were not made in greece and the material of this sculpture and the next one are terracotta.
