BLG 151 Lecture 7: Chapter 8 notes
Document Summary
Chapter 8 control of microorganisms in the environment. 8. 1 microbial growth and replication pathways: targets for control: compare and contrast actions of disinfection, antisepsis, chemotherapy, and sterilization (look at microbio lab book, distinguish between cidal (killing) and static (inhibitory) agents (look at lab note book) Sterilization: destruction or removal of all viable organisms. Disinfection: killing, inhibition, or removal of disease causing (pathogenic organisms) Sanitization: reduction of microbial population to levels deemed safe (based on public health standards) Antisepsis: prevention of infection of living tissue by microorganisms. Chemical agents that kill, or inhibit growth of microorganism when applied to tissue. Common microbial control methods: physical agents, chemical agents, mechanical removal methods, biological agents. Chemotherapy: uses of chemicals to kill of inhibit growth of microorganisms within host tissue. Agents that kill microorganisms or inhibit their growth. Cidal agents: kill (-cide suffice indicating agent that kills) Germicide kills pathogens and many non-pathogens but not necessarily endospores.
