During the germinal period the zygote splits into 2 cells through a process of mitosis. The two cells form 4 cells, and the 4 cells form 8 cells. Concept 6. 1: the union of the ovum and sperm marks the point of conception and the determination of one"s genetic inheritance. Zygotic (germinal period) first 2 weeks. Embryonic period the 3rd through the 8th week. Fetal the 9th week until birth. Uterine contraction, labor and delivery stages of infant growth: neonatal period: brith - 4 weeks. Head is larger in proportion to the body making equilibrium early infancy: 4 weeks - 1 year. Brith weight is double by 5 months and almost tripled by one year. Length increases around 30 inches by one year later infancy: 1-2 years.
