Today"s plan: social ecological/neighbourhood effects research & the spatial distribution of violence, early theory on criminal subcultures, more recent work on culture" and violence, urban gun culture: select theory and research. Interested in neighbourhoods, why some neighbourhoods experienced high levels of crime and violence- low income communities. Tons of people moving in and out of the neighbourhoods. Kinds of people explanations- at risk populations, prone to criminal offending and all living together, should not be surprised that the community experiences high levels of violence. All older, privileged white men who had no experience or understanding- stereotypes of the poor, immigrants, people of colour. Crime and violence concentrate in small communities- not evenly distributed. Zones of transitions- newcomers/ poor people, and immigrant living. Were soon able to move out of the neighbourhoods. But when they moved to different neighbourhoods, there were no high levels of violence. No longer kinds of people- perhaps in part, not wholly.
