Document Summary
Data from 1999 survey shows that the proportion of women who are graduate students in economics declines the more advanced the program or the stage in the program. Women comprise of 39% of the fulltime ma students, 32% of full-time phd students at the precomprehensive stage, and 27% of full-time phd students at the post-comprehensive stage. The percentage of women among part-time graduate students in economics (45%) is higher than their percentage among full-time graduate students, although the absolute numbers are small. Part-time students comprise only 5% of all students: data from stats canada for this period suggest that the number of women graduate students in economics is low relatively speaking. For example, in 1999-2000 the proportion of women in ma and phd programs for social sciences as a whole was 50% and 55%, and 52% and 45% over all disciplines respectively.
