Document Summary

Week 5: short story, short stories are brief and is an old form that has been adapted by writers over the centuries. Since the novel dominates prose fiction it is unfair to compare these two. In short stories there is a tightness of form. There is also a compressed time frame as there is no time to develop the story. Not enough time to develop characters and characters are narrowly drawn. Only key aspects of their character is developed. The setting is less developed and the plot isn"t as complex. Sometimes they begin very close to the stories climax. No narrative structure is unbiased: tone refers to the quality of voice that we hear when working through a story. It is the attitude toward the subject and the audience. Many qualities of tone such a formal tone, solemn tone, somber tone, serious, angry, informal, intimate, playful, ironic, condescending etc.
