Russian literary critic viktor shklovsky (1893-1894) formulated the concept in his essay (cid:862)a(cid:396)t as te(cid:272)h(cid:374)i(cid:395)ue(cid:863) (cid:894)1917(cid:895) De-familiarization refers to an artistic technique whereby the author, by making our familiar everyday world seem strange and unfamiliar, encourages us to examine our world in a new light. I(cid:374) hklo(cid:448)sky"s (cid:448)ie(cid:449) a(cid:396)e de-familiarizes the objects and ideas it supports to represent. In other words art forces us to reconsider the way we perceive the world. The concept of de-familiarization allows one to carry out literary criticism. In order to assess a literary work, the critic asks how effectively does the work de- familiarize the world for its readers. Using this approach, the critic focuses on how the author has written the work and on how the work affects the (cid:396)eade(cid:396)"s pe(cid:396)(cid:272)eptio(cid:374) of the (cid:449)o(cid:396)ld. Mandel hints that arthur is like king lear ; he has 3 wives and his estate is supposed to be split between all 3 just like in king lear.
