Linear story development & deliberate disruption of the linear arc. We"re going to go back to the bones of a story the skeletal structure / the frame all the other elements of a story his hung off of. You need to be understand how a conventional linear story is structured and plotted before you can make sense of (let alone try to create) a non-linear story. Narrative structure, at its most basic, is comprised of set up, conflict, resolution. This is the basis of syd field"s screenplay the most entry level book on screenwriting. Still present but has become more refined and complex. Every story has acts and act breaks. While the typical film has a three act structure there are actually five key elements of structure that are essential for a compelling story and well-constructed plot: inciting incident, progressive complication, crisis, climax, resolution. Exposition, characters introduced/there situation is revealed, stasis is broken/a problem is introduced.
