What is the difference between urban growth and urbanisation and when did they occur.
Know the assumptions of Von Thunen’s model.
- Von Thunen very much ahead of his time, including the use a “modeling” approach. That is, he assumed
that:
- His landscape was an “isolated state” or what we would today call a closed economic system;
- It was an isotropic plain (e.g. no differences in fertility, transportation, topography, etc…)
- All crops had a uniform production function (e.g. they were all produced the most efficient way)
- There was a single central market place
- Farmers and buyers were “economic persons”
- Given these conditions, the only thing left to vary was transportation costs – what would later be called
the friction of distance
Be able to recognise what the employment changes in various sectors has looked like due to
urbanisation.
