Geography 106 Intensive Course QUIZ #4 Urbanisation, Urban Form
What is the difference between urban growth and urbanisation and when did they occur.
Know the assumptions of Von Thunen’s model.
- Von Thunen very much ahead of his time, including the use a “modeling” approach. That is, he assumed
that:
- His landscape was an “isolated state” or what we would today call a closed economic system;
- It was an isotropic plain (e.g. no differences in fertility, transportation, topography, etc…)
- All crops had a uniform production function (e.g. they were all produced the most efficient way)
- There was a single central market place
- Farmers and buyers were “economic persons
- Given these conditions, the only thing left to vary was transportation costs what would later be called
the friction of distance
Be able to recognise what the employment changes in various sectors has looked like due to
urbanisation.
Economic Changes

Know how the street car changed the form of the city.
How has city form evolved over the past hundred years?
Von Thunen’s concept of highest and best use refers to what?
- The idea is that every piece of land will get used by or sold to the highest and best use, where:
- Highest is measured in terms of how much “rent” (or profit) it can generate
- Best in terms of which use (or product) can “best” take advantage of the site’s attributes
- Obviously these terms are a strictly economic interpretation of land use
The ‘City’s Countryside’ refers to what?
