Algeria was a relatively early colony (a part of france) to get independence: modern version of a guerilla war ended an urban guerilla warfare. Muslim population didn"t: 1947: all algerians were given citizenship. 1945: french army and civilian militias got into a fight with villagers in the rural area killed hundred to thousands of them: led to algerians taking up arms. 1956: french air force intercepted a moroccan plane, taking the leadership on the plane hostage: france was upset that the egyptian president who took over the country nationalized the sueze canal. French army used terror extensively, civilians got involved, and the police drew a blind eye to it so the nlf started to expand more. Battle for algiers: helicopters are used for attacks wherever it was difficult to get troops; French algiers were bombing areas outside the muslim area: population were angry about being moved out of their home, and having trouble to find food.
