Germany before 20th century had many conflicting identities, didn"t see themselves as a nation, or nationalist germany. Nationalism changes exisiting nations during this time, creates new ones, and distrupts national order. The balkins were the most volatile part of europe at the time, because they had the highest concentration of ethnic, race, language diversity. Balkins referred to as = tinderbox (fire box, ie. inevitable conflict) A lot of this attributed to the decline of ottoman empire in 1683. Dramatically accelerated and improved during this time period - not a new thing, however. Britian, france, russia, and japan are big empires in the 19th century. 50% of all global finance, investment, trade go through britian during this time. Sun never sets on the british empire (meaning they had an empire every where there was sun) Germany comes late to the scramble for africa but understands that big powers need colonies and a navy. Economic system that directs economy to specific ends.
