MUS 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Johann Van Beethoven, Glossary Of Musical Terminology, Scherzo
Document Summary
Explain his father"s position, and his role in beethoven"s life: His father, johann van beethoven was a mediocre court singer who was better known for his alcoholism than any his musical ability. His father began teaching him music with extraordinary rigor and brutality that affected him for the rest of his life. On a daily basis, beethoven was flogged, locked in the cellar, and deprived of sleep for extra hours of practice. He studied the violin, and clavier with his father as well as taking additional lessons from organists around town. Despite his father"s rough methods, beethoven was a prodigiously, talented musician and displayed flashes of creative imagination that would eventually reach farther than any composer before or since. He made many connections with patrons which helped him land a career. Beethoven had a good relationship with mozart; however, he wasn"t fond of haydn. He was potrayed as wild, aggressive, intolerant, prone to violent fits of rage, and suspicious paranoid.
