Document Summary
Describe normal changes and findings in the pregnant woman. First trimester ocontraception occurs on approximately the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. the blastocyst (developing fertilized ovum) becomes implanted in the uterus 6-10 days after conception. Implantation is sometimes accompanied by a small amount of painless bleeding, which may be interpreted as a menstrual period. the serum hcg test becomes positive after implantation. Fhts can be heard through doppler ultrasonoraphy beginning between the 9 and 10 weeks. When a fertilized egg develops a placenta and membranes but no embryo, this is called a blighted ovum. The hcg levels rise early on and then begin to drop, and vaginal bleeding ensues. Some women with blighted ovum are not aware that they were pregnant. By weeks 12-16, the nausea, vomiting, urinary frequency and fatigue decrease the woman recognizes fetal movement ( quickening ) at approximately 18-20 weeks. As breast enlargement continues, the veins of the breast enlarge and are more visible.
