Week 3: stigma, mental health, & illness: diff. culture, stages of life, social groups, community. A social construct: acceptable vs. unacceptable. Ancient greece: a bodily sign that was cut, burned, and branded into individuals to identify and advertise their flaws/punishment. 3 types of stigma: physical deformities (deaf, blind, crippled), blemishes (undesirable personality traits), and tribal stigma (ethnicity & race) Relationships is importance of stigma to occur: the stigmatized person self-identifies and accepts the negative/unacceptable attribute, subjected to prejudice and discrimination. Individual undergoes dehumanization & loss of identity spoiled identity . Acceptance is the issue of greatest concern to the stigmatized individual. Stigma links w/ illness: out of control, consequence of unacceptable social behavior. When stigma unrecognized: x individualized empathic care, x understanding patient behavior (fear of disclosure) Forgoing treatments to avoid label attachment: prolongs symptoms and extends course of illness, not getting help when they could, e. g. the breast cancer lady.
