America has had access to large amounts of money and effective marketing (there"s nothing inherently superior about american films, but with effective marketing they can make a lot of money) The us has always had a diverse population (films had to be accessible to immigrants - they had to be simple, straightforward and have universal themes - americans became good at making films that appealed to large diverse audience) Fall of communism (communist countries would select a few american films to be allowed, but not many) - once communist governments were gone, american films flooded into these countries. Overall increase in global prosperity (world has become more middle class - millions of people in china, millions in latin america - have money to spend on films)
