Heavily influences the newborn"s exploration of the world: two hours a day: the baby would spend in the state of conducive learning. Drowsiness- just waking up or on the way to go to sleep. Alert awake- distinguished by the activity: most conducive to learning at this state. Newborn states- sleep: newborns sleep twice as much as young adults. Learning: you need rem sleep in order to learn better. Learning is tightly associated in rem sleep: they are learning rapidly and in order for them to learn properly and consolidate their learning, they need the help of rem sleep. Newborn states- crying: adult response to crying. Have an extremely visceral response to cries. They respond differently to a newborn cry and a 6-month old cry.
