Document Summary

Study only the following 2 main sections: moral judgment, antisocial behaviour. Moral judgment: morality of behaviour is based partly on thinking. Piaget observed that children"s morality changes over time: emphasized the importance of peer relations. Piaget studied moral reasoning by: watching kids play games requiring rules and fairness, performed open-ended interviews asking moral questions. Characteristic of children who have not achieved concrete operation: younger than 7 years old, rules are unchangeable, rigid acceptance of authorities" rules. Children reaching concrete operational stage of cognitive development: ages 7 to 10 years old, more interactions with peers, developing ability to perceive other"s perspectives and cooperate. The stage of autonomous morality: rules based on social interaction, ages 11 to 12 years old, no longer accept blind obedience to authority, rules can be changed. Critique of piaget"s theory peer interactions can only foster children"s moral development if involve cooperation. Children understanding of intention of a behaviour develops much earlier than piaget believed.
