Themes: nature and nurture, active child child"s behaviour affects parent"s child rearing, sociocultural context. Functions of families: survival of offspring, economic. Parents trying to make sure that offspring can support themselves: socialization of children. How children in a certain culture learn all the values and beliefs that a particular society thinks as important. Perpetuate social order and pass down a certain culture. Modern developmentalists take a systems approach where everything is affecting everything else. Chronosystem families developing across time, change when the baby learns to walk and when the baby. Family influences community and culture, and culture and community influence family becomes a teenager: direct and indirect influences, social managers. Parents tell children values directly and indirectly model behaviours. Parents are social managers because they decide what things their child does (daycare, baseball, pick what friends they might have) Children also influence parents: the changing family system. More single adults now: people are marrying later.
