PSY 505 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Representativeness Heuristic, David Buss, Behaviorism
Document Summary
This course discusses the pattern of psychological characteristics that differentiate each of us from others and lead us to act consistently across some situations. Rogers: clinical psych and what that means for personality. Not covered: behaviorism (skinner, watson & pavlov) (chapter 10) Cold readings/forer effect: broad statements that apply to everyone, internalize these: people want to find meaning in ambiguity, aka representative heuristic. Hot readings: search person to find specific info. Psychics: cold and hot readings, universal norms. Horoscopes: making sense of non-sense, interpret ambiguity. Dating sites: define yourself in x words. Maybe we are sporty , or pretty , or smart , or bad a straight-shooter . Maybe it"s that we are a good or honest person just not always. Perhaps our sense of self is solely defined by differences to others. Literally, trying to understand ourselves and others. Personality is dynamic across situations but remarkably consistent.
