PSY 707 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Cognitive Restructuring, Avoidance Coping, Aaron T. Beck
Document Summary
The study of coping by jones & bright: coping refers to the effective use of resources & strategies to deal w/ internal/external demands. Coping is important in research on stress as identified by lazarus. Origins in freud"s psychoanalytic theory (19th century), continued by daughter, anne freud. In the 1960s coping was a term used to describe defence mechanisms. Research in 60s & 70s focused on coping w/ impending health, eg. when someone is terminally ill, it starts w/ denial, bargaining then eventually acceptance. Generally research looks at coping as dispositional (ie. stable, ppl have a set repertoire or employ same coping skills in any situation)/situational. Repression/ sensitizers reflect a behavioural model vs. monitors & blunters reflect a cognitive model. Coping is distinct from personality but found that those high in neuroticism tend to be maladaptive vs. those high in extraversion tend to be adaptive. Situational models of coping (jones & bright): lazarus supports this model.
