Document Summary

Reconstructing arguments helps you figure out whether the information you have really does constitute a good reason to believe proposed conclusions. Principle of charity (pc) when reconstructing an argument, try to formulate a reconstruction that is well-formed, has reasonable premises, and is undefeated. Two kinds of writing easily confused with argumentative writing are: descriptive writing is writing in which the author merely describes some event. Author makes no attempt to establish the truth of any particular claim. Ex: newspaper: rhetorical writing expresses a point of view about a topic and contains nothing designed to show the truth of its point of view. It simply asserts the author"s views, perhaps forcefully and emotionally. Sometimes a passage contains sections that are argumentative and others that are descriptive or rhetorical. Reducing the author"s main point to 1 statement will help: any proposition can be a conclusion.
