What is sociology? (how people operate in groups) The sociological imagination (c. wright mills: asks us to make connections to various aspects of the world, use our imaginations and connect personal reasons to broader patterns, relate our personal troubles to the outer world. Distinguishing sociology from other disciplines: sociology relies on other disciplines, psychology studies individuals and the way they behave individually, social work studies ways in which individuals exist in social working sectors (ex: inequality, racism etc. ) Macro vs. micro sociology: macro: larger scale, broader social institutions, inequality, micro: individual experiences, smaller groups, dynamics. Individuals act negatively when their own identity isn"t respected. Identity of an athlete leads to several political issues and these issues are usually hidden: personal achievement. Common theme that each individual can achieve their dreams with hard work (fewer video clips about athletes receiving gold medals and achieving their dreams) Infrastructure and development of sport: friendly competition and international diplomacy.
