SOC 500 Lecture 7: Youth and Society Lecture March 15
Document Summary
Most important form of primary socialization is the family, serve as the gateway into society for the child. Family loses some socialization importance as children age. When it comes to educational and vocational decisions, the family is the #1 resource. 94% of teens between 15 and 19 report their friends as their #1 source of information and support when they have a problem. Youth relationships with their peers are becoming more important in today"s society. Meaning and identity can be derived from the normative structures of a society associated with its culture namely, the value-based patterns and standards of behavior. Youth have fewer meaning structures to guide them through key transitions, society is becoming anomic meaning less normed (less normative structures) Youth today find themselves lacking in guidance from traditional sources (kin groups, religion, etc) A subculture is a relatively diffuse social network having a shared identity based around certain ideas, practices and objects.
