Document Summary

1881-1885 the building of the cpr was happening canadian national railway. Halifax is still one of the central places that things are shipped to. The canadian state needed people to build the railway and they advertised the hell out of it. Canadians signed up to do the railway because it was (1) too low of a wage, (2) too dangerous: so they went to china to specifically incise chinese men to come without their wives & kids. They signed up because canadian dollars exchanged to a lot of their money. Coming to canada they didn"t know they had to pay in canadian dollars for a place to stay and live. So the wage they were paying them was actually low when you look at the price of living at the time. For every mile of the railroad, there was 10 chinese men. 1881-1885 immigrants could not marry white women basically no opportunity for marriage.
