Until 1962, there was no such thing as child abuse. Before then it was simply considered to be disciplining. Kempe and colleagues gave it a name from a psychological perspective. Argued that this particular form of discipline (physical) is problematic. Physical majority of studies on ca look at physical manifestations. Sexual only really looked at for children under the age of 10 because it is assumed that if one is over the age of 10, one has already started having consensual sex. In the case of kids, we talk about neglect because they are minors and have no socioeconomic, political or legal power. Children are entirely dependent on their parents and therefore parents are expected to provide for their children. Women are overwhelmingly abusers of children, but not in the same way as men. Single mothers are being re-victimized for being poor. Child neglect is almost often the product of poverty.
