Possible effects of mass media on children have generate anxiety, controversy, activism and moral panics for years. 1930s: payne study our movie made children helped precipitate calls for more censorship. Since then, nearly every new media form has led to calls of censorship to save the children . Concerns over media effects and children are wide and varied. A shared concern of both the right and left, but often for different reasons. May desensitize children to sex and violence. May promote consumerism at too young an age. May propagate racist, sexist and homophobic discourses. Negative effects: education/learning, numb the senses, communication, contribute to social estrangement, teach empathy, discourage empathy, stimulate imagination, suppress local cultures, encourage multiculturalism, encourage destructive behaviour, promote democratic ideals, deteriorate morals, promote consumerism. Recent concerns on the left relate to global dissemination of american hegemonic values. Most children"s television produced in u. s. , canada and england.
