What do we already know about children"s popular culture: whiteness. Gender norms: the western beauty myth (lemish, p. 427, gender as oppositional. Princess culture: naturalizes hierarchies (artz, 450), orentein (2011) cinderella ate my daughter, consumer culture (toys r us ad , limited range of femininities. Either innocence or sexualization: culture of entitlement/ narcissism, beautiful little girls, that"s all that matters. In disney: heterosexual desire as magical, beauty and the beast, women"s bodies as objects of heterosexual desire. Race in disney: take notes, think about in relation to chapter 47 (artz) and chapter 44 (lemish) Ability: medical model, difference is biological/ psychological. Impairment= bodily dysfunction: disability= how that impairment is produced in a social context to be disabling, disability is produced through policies, the built environment, stereotypes, ableism, etc. Jokes: needing to be treated gently, reduced to their difference. The paradox of childhood : children"s stories are set in a timeless (feudal, otherworldly) land, children"s stories as nostalgic.
