Chapter 3 - canadian families in the past: the decline of the patriarchal family. British and french families are both immigrants. They had to follow and move with the seasons. They were also considered nomadic = move around from place to place. Then moved on in search for food. They preyed on mother nature, they saw themselves tied to the earth, nature, and animals. They were all part of the same system. They showed respect to both mother nature. These communities only had what was necessary to survival (very few possessions) Consumer goods would have impeded their will to survive because they would have to pack up every few months. Kin-ordered = political and social arrangements of the society. Women still chose to share power with men. Special powers = female elders elected the chief.
