Muslims are a heterogeneous community representing people from variety of cultures, race, genders, &diverse walks of life. Muslim women= complex multidimensional actors engaged in different kinds of actions & projects. Modern western thought defined the west & the east as 2 opposite civilizations. Encarta map= shows imperial control of various european powers over muslim socieities of. 19th century large parts of africa & asia (where most of muslims live) were under colonial control of britain & france. Imperialism= economic & political control is exercised from colonialism country involves population transfer from one country to another and control over land, people, & resources. Don"t get to see the realistic representations of the orient in literary or art. Seen as: sensual women used by man, mysterious place full of secrets and monsters. Orientals are all the same--- india, syria or egypt. Image outside of history placid, still, & eternal.
