Indonesia= archipelago country of 17 508 islands (6 000 inhabited: stretched along equator in southeast asian. Largest muslim country in world: 200 million followers. But also a multicultural society: society is often acclaimed to be good example of compatibility of islam & democracy as well as religion & cultural identities. Islam arrived in indonesia in the 12th century through traders & merchants from gujarat, Southwest india: developed into muslim indonesian culture largely egalitarian & tolerant. Islamic text has been interpreted in way that emphasize social equality & contest status hierarchies. Indonesia often categorized as secular state but gov tends to describe it as neither secular nor islamic but a state based on philosophy of pancasila: emphasizes belief in singular god but ideas of social justice & harmony. Rinaldo situates her research in period after 1998 when indonesia started new era of democratic reforms after long period of military rule from 1965-1998 supported by western states.
