In common sense terms the meaning of the verb entertain references something enjoyable, pleasurable and something able to hold our attention. The term entertainment is also a contested one in which who produces our entertainment, who is produced for and what is considered popular or profitable entertainment are debated upon. A 90 minute film rather than a 3 hour film, for example. A (cid:498)difficult(cid:499) film with little narrative versus a popular franchise, for example. Is dominated by a recognized group of corporate entities: sony, disney etc: entertains via popular aesthetic products created and sold for profit. Includes movies, television, music, advertising, popular literature and now and increasingly more so influential social media. In the case of cinema, often has built in narrative devices to greater ensure the possibility of sequels and external marketing success.
