BPK 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Mass, Job Design
Document Summary
Many jobs may approach or exceed worker"s maximum voluntary strength. Evidence this results in higher risk of experiencing musculoskeletal capabilities disorders. Need to provide means of evaluating muscular strength capabilities of workers so that: Jobs can be designed to eliminate taxing exertions: workers performing physically demanding jobs have the strength to safely perform required tasks. Effectiveness of worker strength evaluation in reducing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (wmsds) depends on purpose of evaluation. Assessment of physical strength has two purposes in ergonomics: Job design most likely to have positive impact in reducing wmsds: strength of population of workers used to design job so that majority of workers find exertion acceptable. Strength testing used for purpose of worker selection: make sure workers have sufficient strength to perform physical demands of job, this approach of controlling wmsds is negates designing the job to fit the worker.
