Women have been active in every style of music since 1900. This unit discusses women composers who are significant in their work. Economic and social changes happened after 1800 that benefited women in music. Emerging feminist movement allowed women to demand access to a complete musical education. By 1900: female musicians demanded inclusion in orchestras female composers demanded admittance to competitions. Appeared as orchestral musicians and even as soloists. Of the different music facets, it was hardest for women to achieve equality in composition. Professional musician and composer were considered more working class, and thus, not suitable for aristocratic ladies. Two female composers whose music was unknown during their lifetime, but were revived later with great success: Clara schumann (robert schumann"s wife) was recognized as a great concert pianist. Fanny mendelssohn was encouraged to learn music, but discouraged by her family from publishing her work. Composed 466 pieces of music, all chamber works.
