Laws regarding family violence did not exist until 1980s. 5 types of violence (physical, sexual, neglect, financial, emotional: neglect is the most common in children & elderly, emotional is often considered the most hurtful, financial abuse is typically studied in the context of elderly abuse. Vaw more likely to be reported than vam (36% vs. 17%) 1/5 university students reported experiencing physical assault by partner in last 12 months. Police recognize spousal abuse as serious but the majority of victims do not contact. Not obeying or arguing with the man. Not caring adequately for children or home. The man suspecting the woman of infidelity. Intimate violence is not solely men against women. 2005 study found that most violence was mutual and mile, followed by mutual severe. International study on university students in 32 countries reported slightly higher % of women engaged in minor violence & equal rates of serious violence.
