Vpd anti-gang tactics have reduced violence and decreased their numbers. Gang members may be detained/imprisoned bc they are gang members. Many innocent people are shot and killed. Crim464 week 1: gang myths and stereotypes. Youth gangs are given high priority for law enforcement. Youth gangs remain poorly defined and vaguely characterized. Myths complicate determination of appropriate community response. Author recommends juvenile court as one response. Flashy cars and clothes make them a target for their enemies. Gangs will commit any crime that makes them money. Too many hands grabbing too few dollars. In vancouver, they are multi-ethnic with no territorial boundaries. All gangs are large, powerful criminal organizations. Few youth gangs have evolved into highly organized adult criminal orgs. Small local gangs are assumed to be affiliated with big city parent gangs. Myth persists bc of the similarity of names and symbols. Youth gangs migrate across the country to establish satellite sets.
