A population health approach focuses on improving and maintaining the health status of the population. Aims to reduce inequities in health status between population groups. Moves beyond traditional health sector approaches to improving health. Focuses on the role of the determinants of health . Known as the lalonde report because it was lead by marc lalonde. Rather, other elements, termed the determinants of health, existed outside the health care system, and had more of an influence on our health. Health promoting factors found in one"s living and working conditions, rather than individual risk factors that influence the risk for a disease, or vulnerability to disease or injury: income and social status. Income and social status is the single most important determinant of health. People with higher incomes generally live longer, healthier lives than people with lower incomes. Health status improves at each step up the income and social hierarchy.
