Operated on living animals in which gastric fistula - channel leading from digestive organs to outside of body - was inserted so that digestive processes could be studied. Work won him 1904 nobel prize in physiology. During digestion work, pavlov discovered conditioned response - learned behaviour. Conditioned vs unconditioned response which are unlearned (innate) responses to particular stimuli.
